My roommate James and I are on our way to Vail after leaving Boulder for a weekend of skiing. It's still early in December but we've got a killer snow storm coming through and we're both planning on staying at our buddy Sammy's place in Vail. We're going to get away from our school work in what is lining up to be a great powder weekend. Nearly midnight and we just got off the phone with Sammy to tell him that we are beginning our descent down Vail pass and should be there on schedule.

My first trip to Monarch ski area was with my 12 yr old boy Chris (March 1999). We drove down to Monarch from Denver by car approximately 100 miles/2 1/2 hr drive. We stayed at the Monarch Lodge just down from the ski area. TAlK about powder snow!! There was 12-14 inches on the ground and still snowing. Chris was a beginning skier and never done powder snow. I had just started XC skiing when I joined the Mountaineers to learn about the backcountry in winter and to find people to ski with. I was dumbstruck by this beautiful blonde divorcee but managed to arrange a low-stress meeting. Two weeks later we were married. Then she said, I'm going to ski the Nisqually Glacier with some friends; you should come along. So there I go with XC boots and lightweight BD Valmonte skis. It was a really cold winter day, I had two intense day on my body, it was the last down hill and I decided to go on an expert moggle ride, had been a freaking hard ride and I was so tired, but I had seen before on the chair lift, a big rock which seems good to jump, it was stronger than me, I needed to do it.
